Indonesian tower company Bersama Digital Infrastructure Asia has tied up with homegrown investment firm Opti-Teknology Philippines Inc. to invest in an independent builder and operator of telecommunication towers in the country.
With the signing of an agreement for the subscription of new shares, Bersama Digital will own 51 percent while Opti-Teknology will acquire 49 percent of Alliance Towers Corp. The transaction is targeted to be completed in September.
The Philippine government has a standard tower policy aimed at upgrading the nation’s information communication technology infrastructure.
In support of this, Alliance Towers intends to partner closely with all the three major mobile network operators (MNOs) in the country as it secured tower orders from them. It has been operating towers in Visayas and Mindanao as of June 30.
The shareholders of Opti-Tek and Bersama Digital are highly complementary. They will provide Alliance Towers with long-term technical, financial, and local, on-ground support.
The local tower company was founded by Opti-Tek’s equity owners, who are proven business leaders and entrepreneurs with access to significant local resources.
The controlling shareholders of Bersama Digital established PT Tower Bersama Infrastructure Tbk. in 2004 and continue to control it at present. Since 2012, Tower Bersama has organically built over 12,000 of its nearly 21,000 towers in Indonesia, making it one of the leading organic tower builders globally.
“We are confident that Alliance Towers can leverage Tower Bersama’s highly impressive track record as an organic tower builder and operator. The shareholders will actively support Alliance Towers in its objective of providing high-quality telecom infrastructure to enhance the lives of Filipino mobile users,” said Sherwin Hing, chairman of Alliance Towers and director of Opti-Tek.
Enrique Y. Gonzalez, director of Alliance Towers and Opti-Tek, described the partnership as “a major milestone” for their firm and the industry. He said: “This strengthens our capabilities in providing mission-critical infrastructure to MNOs.”
Bersama Digital Director Gavin Caudle said he is bullish about the independent tower sector in the Philippines.
